I am a yoga teacher and psychotherapist based in New York City. Through my teaching, I hope to work alongside my students to refine how they move through the world. Each person’s body - including yours - is a map of their experience in the world, their inheritance, their skills and challenges, how life has shaped them and how they have shaped their lives. How you do one thing is how you do everything, and as such, yoga contextualizes and sheds light on our experiences. How exciting! A yoga practice is a place to reorganize, refine, and learn new techniques.
A good yoga practice goes beyond leaving you feeling invigorated and at ease. It can also grow your facility and longevity in the rest of your life.
I utilize the theory and vocabulary ofKatonah Yoga and vinyasa teachings that are practical and informed. I received my 200-hour training from Sky Ting Yoga, where I later did a mentorship with Alex Sharry. I’m a certified Katonah Teacher and continue to study Katonah yoga in an ongoing apprenticeship at The Studio, in New York.
In addition to my yoga studies, I hold a Master’s in Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and am a practicing psychotherapist. I also have a BFA in acting and theatre-making from NYU where I studied primarily at the Experimental Theatre Wing. This training brought me into contact with many somatic practices including Contact Improvisation, Aikido, Capoeira, Tai Chi, Alexander technique, Feldenkrais, Suzuki training and more. It has made me keen to how our physical shape, emotions, intentions, breath, and imagination intermix and interact. Its my passion to share these tools for mapping and navigating our lives powerfully and joyously.
About Katonah Yoga:
Katonah Yoga ® is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination — in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being. Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure are incorporated in Katonah Yoga practices. Visit the Katonah Yoga Center website for more information and resources.
